White Bear Lake Area Schools provides a comprehensive program for students with disabilities. Services are provided to students who range in age from birth through high school, with some students receiving help until age 21. Most students receive services in their neighborhood school and when possible in their regular class setting.
The Special Services Department coordinates support services available to District students including school social workers, psychologists, occupational and physical therapists, adapted physical education, deaf/hard of hearing, vision services, nursing services, speech and language services, and other specialized instruction for students identified as having special needs.
All services are developed to facilitate each student in reaching his or her potential. Inclusive education between regular and special education allows for the opportunity to learn and develop in an age-appropriate setting. From early intervention to community-based vocational training, students are provided a quality, individualized education program (IEP) in the least restrictive environment.
Each school in the system has a special education team who provides services to students with a variety of handicapping conditions. A lead teacher is available at each school to assist students and families in the Special Education Program.
Individual Education Plan Team -
A student's needs are determined by an Individual Education Plan/Individual Family Service Plan Team that includes the parents of the student. The Team decides what is educationally appropriate for the students. Non-public students are eligible for assessment and direct services in the public school under a Service Plan.
Students receiving service include those who meet the special education verification criteria of the Minnesota Department of Education and the White Bear Lake Area Schools.
Instructional Alternatives -
Students with special education needs will be served in their home school and in the regular classroom whenever possible. There will be some instances when students are grouped for special education services within the district for the best instructional program. Some students are transported to other schools within the district or other districts for specialized programs.
Instructional Alternatives within the White Bear Lake Area School District include:
- Students with disabilities functioning in the regular education program with the assistance of special education supportive services such as: consultation with the classroom teacher, monitoring progress, modification of the curriculum, or direct teaching within the regular classroom.
- Students with disabilities functioning in the regular education program but needing direct special education services outside of the regular classroom.
- Students with disabilities whose primary placement is in a special education program with some mainstreaming in regular education.
Students who, due to the intensity of their needs, are placed in specialized programs in locations other than their home school.
