Importance of outdoor recess

Starting the week of January 15, all of the elementary buildings in the White Bear Lake Area School district will use a -10 degree wind chill rule. If the weather is -10 degrees or warmer, the students will be going outside for recess.

This decision is based on the importance of physical activity, the benefits of unstructured play and outdoor play for young children, and scientific information provided by the National Weather Service, which can be found in the table below.

Each of our families can help with safety by making sure students have winter coats, winter hats, winter boots, snow pants and thick winter gloves.

The White Bear Lake Area Educational Foundation, through donations made to "The Closet," has winter gear available to those who need it. District families in need may contact a school principal, counselor, or psychologist, who will contact the Foundation and facilitate confidential arrangements.
