AARP Driver Safety Program

Minnesota law mandates a 10% reduction in car insurance premiums for persons 55 years and older who complete a defensive driving course.  Courses consist of an overview of safe driving; there are no written or driving tests required.  There are three locations where the courses are offered:

  • Senior Center, 2484 East County Road F, White Bear Lake

  • White Bear District Center (WBDC), 4855 Bloom Avenue., White Bear Lake

  • Hugo City Hall, 14669 Fitzgerald Avenue North, Hugo

Advanced registration is required and can be done by mail; walk-in; at the Community Services and Recreation Department District Center Offices, 4855 Bloom Avenue, White Bear Lake; or online at www.whitebearregistration.org.  Your class fee is forfeited if you do not cancel or reschedule two days prior to your class.  No drop-ins.

The Full Course is a 2-day, 8-hour class that requires attendance on both days.

The Refresher Course is 4 hours and is for those who have completed a Full Course but need to renew the certificate.

Nutrition Programs

DINING SITES

Creative Senior Dining sites are open to any senior, age 60 or over and their spouse regardless of age.  All qualifying people are welcome at any dining site.

Each meal consists of a warm, appetizing entrée, vegetables/fruits, bread or roll, milk, and dessert.  The meal is nutritionally balanced to meet one-third of the USDA Recommended Daily Dietary Allowance for Adults.  Low salt, diabetic, and mechanical soft meals are also available.  Please request these special diets when you make your reservation.  A monthly menu is available from the site coordinator, and/or menus are printed weekly in the Sunday edition of the Pioneer Press.

White Bear Lake Area Site Location:  Willow Wood Apts., 3441 Willow Ave., White Bear Lake, meal is served at 11:30 a.m., reservations need to be made three business days ahead by calling 651-748-0087 between 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.   Suggested donation is $3.00/meal.

Lunch at St. John in the Wilderness
St. John in the Wilderness, St. Mary of the Lake, and First Presbyterian offer lunch the last Saturday of each month at 11:30 a.m. at St. John in the Wilderness to members of the community who have a need.
The church is located at 2175 First Street in White Bear Lake.
Door is open at 11:00 a.m.
The meal is free.

  • www.tcaging.org - Website of the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging (Twin Cities, MN) has a section on caregiving that includes materials for caregivers. Check out the Share the Care Journal that helps caregivers plan, organize, and reflect on the caregiving process.

  • www.careproviders.org - For Minnesota nursing home and assisted living information including assessment tool, guidelines for choosing homes, and a fully searchable Facility Finder by county or city, type of provider, or services offered.

  • www.alz.org/mnnd/ – Alzheimer’s Association provides resources for persons with dementia and caregivers including local listings for Caregiver Support Groups.

Transportation Options

Ramsey County

Lionmobile – A shared ride, STS certified, door-to-door, transportation service. Rides are provided on a lift-equipped van, for persons 60+ years of age or older and qualified disabled adults under the age of 60 who live within the White Bear Lake Area School District boundaries. Service hours are Monday - Friday, 8:15 a.m. - 4:15 p.m.  Non-medical rides are also available for activities, errands, visiting, shopping etc. Ride requests are accepted on a “first come – first served” basis up to a month in advance of your medical appointment.  Non-medical rides are accepted on a “first come – first served” basis up to a week in advance.  For more specific information on areas served or to arrange a ride call the White Bear Area Senior Program, 651-653-3122. The Lionmobile is funded by the White Bear Lake Area School District, White Bear Lake Lion’s Club, Vadnais Heights and Hugo Lion’s Clubs, Cities of Birchwood, Vadnais Heights , White Bear Lake and White Bear Township, Metropolitan Council, donations and fares.

Transit Link – A regional shared ride, dial-a-ride transit service providing curb-to-curb to eligible riders in our area. This service is available to the general public and is intended to serve areas where regular transit route service is not available. Transit Link is available throughout the seven-county metropolitan area. There are five service areas and riders can travel within and between any service area. Some trips may require a transfer to a regular transit route, but riders will only be required to transfer at transit hubs where regular route service is frequent and easy to find.  For further information or to arrange a ride call 651-602-5465. Metro Mobility – An ADA paratransit shared ride service offering door through door service for people with various disabilities. Riders must apply to use Metro Mobility service by completing an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) paratransit eligibility form. Functional obstacles to the use of regular route bus service determine riders’ status, and they may be physical, cognitive, or environmental.  The certification process takes up to 21 working days once the Metro Mobility Service Center (MMSC) receives the completed applications. Visitors to the Twin Cities can use Metro Mobility for up to 21 days without becoming certified if they are certified to use a similar service in their home community. Information and applications are available from the Metro Mobility Service Center at 651-602-1111 or an application form can be downloaded from the web site at www.metrocouncil.org/transportation/MetroMobility/index.htm.

Metropolitan Transit (regular route bus service) - Senior fare is available during non-peak hours (9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.) For route and schedule information or to check on the time schedule call Metropolitan Transit Council Operations at 612-373-3333. Bus schedules are available at the White Bear Lake Library or you can get customized scheduling information online at www.metrotransit.org.

PRISM Express Transportation Service – (People Responding in Social Ministry) Non-profit transportation service offering door-to-door assistance.  To set up your appointment or for more information call the Reservation Line at 763-529-1252.

Road to Recovery (sponsored by the American Cancer Society) This volunteer based, transportation service provides rides to and from treatment for people with cancer who do not have a ride or unable to drive themselves Rides provided are subject to volunteer availability in our area. If you need a ride to treatment, call 1-800-227-2345.

Washington County
