Performing When We Can’t Hear the Cheering
This weekend, members of our high school boy’s and girl’s teams will compete in the Minnesota High School cross country meet.

At the beginning of the race, throngs of spectators will cheer as hundreds of young runners explode off the starting line and then weave together though the first turns of the course.

By a mile into the race, the runners will spread out to single file or into undulating groups, running along narrow paths though woods of oaks, maples, and poplar colored by Minnesota’s autumn. The woods will be quiet, far from the cheering crowd.

Here, out of sight and amid the trees, runners will draw on hundreds of miles of training to concentrate on a common goal: giving their best.

Most boys and girls of school age have dreams of excelling in something. In these dreams they may see themselves greeted by a cheering crowd. Making a goal. Scoring a touchdown. Starring on stage. Being recognized for courage or heroism.

But at some point they discover, as is true for most of us, that life is not lived out in front of a cheering crowd, but in the quiet of a trail in the woods, on a homemade skating rink on a grey winter’s day, or in quiet study at the kitchen table.

In order to be competitive at State, our runners trained daily during the summer, even on days they wanted a break. Last weekend I was present when 25 elementary and middle school students were honored by the youth basketball association for taking 10,000 shots over the summer. This month I watched high school students push though exhaustion and rehearse a full cast scene for the fall musical over and over until they weren’t running into one another.

In the classroom, on stage, or on the court, ice, or field, our students work to be the best they can be. If you ask students about why they work so hard, you’ll find it is not about the cheering.

They will tell you about giving their best, about learning discipline, perseverance and teamwork. They may also explain that it is about making their family, school, and community proud of them.

Next Tuesday is Election Day in Minnesota. The White Bear Lake Area Schools has a school board election and an important vote on renewal of the district’s operating levy. By now you have heard the story many times: of the promises kept by our School Board after the 2007 levy passed, of our dramatically rising test scores and student achievements, of our national recognition for financial stewardship and the budget reductions we have made to administration and support to keep the focus on the classroom, and of partnerships that have given our students and community more opportunities without raising taxes.

You may also have read that this renewal levy has been endorsed by city councils of White Bear Lake, Vadnais Heights, and Hugo and by the White Bear Chamber of Commerce, the Vadnais Heights Economic Development Corporation. Also, our elected representatives in the Minnesota House and Senate from both the Republican and Democratic parties support the levy renewal.

Especially in this era of lean state funding and delays in payment of education state aid, our local levy provides critical stability for programs and support for students. A “yes” vote on the renewal levy will not raise taxes. But it does require a commitment by each voter to continue the investment. Without this renewal, the District would face a 15% reduction in its budget, with the significant ramifications that would entail.

When you go to the polls on Tuesday, you won’t hear crowds cheering. In our democracy, our decisions are made in the privacy of the voting booth. But as you vote, consider the opportunities your commitment will yield for the children of our community.

Somewhere in the distance you may hear cheering after all.

Dr. Michael Lovett
Superintendent

 Student News

Seniors help students succeed
When the WBLAHS musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” actors take the stage later this month, they’ll be able to portray office workers in the 1950s and 1960s knowing they were well trained – by area seniors who lived the “real world experiences” decades ago.

Seniors, ranging in age from 60 to 101, gathered to “help students learn history from those who lived it” through the White Bear Area Senior Program.

A lively conversation, filled with gasps of surprise here and there, ensued. Students were shocked by mention some of the office scenes that never would take place these days – bans on pant suits for women, workers smoking at their desks, stores offering private customer credit lines.

The seniors will have a chance to see if their training sessions with the students paid off, as the students will perform the musical at 7 p.m. on Nov. 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19. A 2 p.m. matinee performance, which is free to senior citizens, will be performed at 2 p.m. on Nov. 12.

Central life lessons
Central Middle School students raised almost $800 to fight breast cancer last week. Students each paid $1 to participate in the walk during their Home Base period, walking a course and listening to the WBLAHS drum line.

At the end of the walk, students received a pink ribbon bracelet to honor people fighting the battle of breast cancer. Much of the planning was done by members of Central’s Junior National Honor Society.

Another group of students at Central that is focused on service is the "Central Serves" service learning group.

For their first event of the year, the students volunteered at "Feed My Starving Children" in Coon Rapids. The students worked as a team to helped fill food packages in an “assembly line.”

Next on the agenda for the group is raking leaves for Central neighbors, which is scheduled for next week.

North Campus numbers game
The North Campus Student Council students thought outside the box – or outside the can, as it may be – this year for their annual food drive. Instead of the usual “first hour” competition that has traditionally taken place, the students have competed to collect food against one another this week based upon math teachers.

It has been reported that the math teachers – who obviously specialize in numbers – have been having a great time looking over the counts and encouraging their students to keep the additions coming in. Another motivational aspect has been that each day of the week has been assigned a creative name and focus: Meaty Monday, Two Can Tuesday, Wash up Wednesday, Thrifty Thursday, and Fruit and Veggie Friday.

Adding to the initiative’s creativity is a promotional video produced by the students. See the piece, which highlights students, staff members, and community members, here.

The food drive is a week-long event hosted by White Bear Lake Area High School, but schools district-wide have been participating in the activity. This year’s goal is to raise 16,000 pounds of food for the White Bear Lake Area Food Shelf.

Colorful bunch
Lincoln Elementary’s hallways looked a bit more colorful than usual last Friday as students paraded through the school dressed in costume for the annual Fall Parade. The event has been a tradition at Lincoln for more than 25 years.

The rest of the days of the week offered excitement as well. Monday kicked off the week-long traveling Scholastic Book Fair, through which students added to their libraries. That evening, the school hosted “Lincoln Idol,” complete with a special performance of “Ain't Home 'Til White Bear,” written and produced by Lincoln parents Jason Medvec and John King. Lincoln students accompanied Mr. Medvec, serving as backup singers.

The school community also celebrated the 90th anniversary of American Education Week by inviting visitors in to enjoy the school lunch with their students Tuesday through Thursday.

This week has offered excitement as well. The Lincoln Student Council participated in the district-wide food drive hosted by WBLAHS (see story above). Students also welcomed their Artist in Residence, a certified art teacher brings art instruction into each classroom one time each trimester. The enrichment classroom activity provides Lincoln students with exposure to formal art education and is funded by the PTA.

The WBLAHS Theatre Department will once again participate in Hennepin Theatre Trust’s 2011-12 SpotLight Musical Theatre Program for its fall musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” The department has participated for the past two years, receiving accolades each of the years. The SpotLight program is an education initiative that honors, supports and advocates for Minnesota high school musical theatre students and programs. The Girls Soccer team had two players named to the All-State team. Senior Christina Ware was selected as All-State honorable Mention team. Senior Alexis Foley was selected to the 2011 All-State team and was named Ms. Soccer. Wrestling sign-ups for the high school teams will take place at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10 at the WBLAHS - North Campus Phy. Ed Lab.
