Where Everybody Belongs

On the final day of fifth grade last spring, with graduation over and yearbooks mostly signed, the boys and girls suddenly realize they’ll miss the familiarity and security of their elementary school. In those final hours, there are tears and hugs for teachers, staff members and friends.

By mid-August, two weeks before school begins this fall, newly-independent sixth graders trail behind their families, wanting to appear grown up at Middle School Registration Night. They look for friends from their “old” school and wonder whether they’ll fit in.

One young man is preoccupied with a different sort of “fitting in” as he peers into his empty locker. “Nope, won’t fit,” he remarks to his mom.

“What?” says mom.

“I won’t fit,” he says. “I heard that in middle school the younger kids get stuffed into lockers. But it’s okay – I won’t fit!” Thus reassured, his confidence builds.

One week before school, all the sixth graders bus, ride, or walk to Central or Sunrise. It’s not real school yet, but WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) Day. Under the watchful eyes and guidance of teachers, eighth grade mentors lead the sixth graders through team building activities and discussions to help them learn what it takes to be successful in middle school. The eighth grade WEB leaders wear brightly colored shirts complete with inspiring quotations, and staff members wear the same.

At the beginning of WEB Day, the sixth graders are still timid and shy. Three hours later, the sixth graders burst out through the doors to waiting busses and parents amid laughter and new-found confidence.

This first week of school, our more than 600 sixth graders appear confident and secure. They tell us “I love Central!” or “I love Great Sunrise Park Middle School!” In classrooms they are engaged, serious and focused. In hallways and at lunch their timidness gives way to confidence as they build new friendships.

For all of us, transitions can be difficult, whether we’re new to a school, starting a new job, or we’re the parent sending our child off to the next level. For our sixth graders, the WEB program means they need only look to their new friends and adults in the brightly colored t-shirts to find an encouraging word and somebody who knows their name.

All of us feel nervous or unsure of ourselves from time to time. Wouldn’t it be great if there were always someone supportive close by, easy to spot in a brightly colored t-shirt?

Dr. Michael Lovett
Superintendent

General Information

Road construction on Highway 61
Lane closures on Highway 61 combined with construction on Interstate 35-E have resulted in increased traffic congestion in our area. These traffic delays have affected our bus transportation during the first week of school, increasing the length of bus rides for our students. We have been in contact with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and have requested that work be scheduled to avoid lane closures during the critical morning and afternoon times we are transporting students.

 Student News

Smile – you’re on camera!
White Bear Lake Area High School – North Campus students saw many new faces in the hallways and classrooms, but one person stood out as a guest.

A photographer from the Pioneer Press joined Joseph Christensen’s fifth period class to take photos of Christensen, which will accompany a story about the WBLAHS teacher in this Sunday’s issue of the Twin Cities newspaper. The story is a follow-up to a highlight published ten years ago that covered how Christensen’s teaching changed after September 11.

After the portrait was taken, the photographer captured “school’s in session!” excitement of two students in the hallway. That photo ended up on the front cover of the Pioneer Press. Another classroom photo wound up in a “First Day of School” online photo gallery, found here.

Making connections
Middle school students in the WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) programs provided a welcoming environment for new students this week and last, complete with funny hats, inspirational t-shirts, and an occasional cheer now and then.

Last week, WEB eighth graders at Central and Sunrise Park led tours of the schools and offered advice to the incoming sixth graders. This week, they have been a key element in the schools’ welcoming atmospheres.

The program is one of a few mentoring programs in the District. Like the WEB Program, the student-created Cross-Aged Mentoring Program (C.A.M.P.) puts students in mentoring roles for other students. WBLAHS juniors and seniors mentor fifth grade students at Willow Lane. High school DARE mentors also work with fifth grade students throughout the District, acting out scenarios with students and reinforcing DARE refusal skills during the students’ DARE program. And cross-aged connections that are forged between elementary classrooms introduce students to the idea of mentoring at an early age.

Staff members, students, alumni celebrate Convocation
This year’s home-grown Opening Convocation event was complete with singing, dancing, and the celebrating of “White Bear Pride.”

Alumni representing the decades – from as far back as the 1930s - joined with staff members to kick off the 2011-12 academic year. Student performers joined in, providing music and dance interpretations.

Retiree Jim Galvin and the WBLAHS cheerleaders provided lessons audience members with lessons on White Bear Lake Area High School’s school song - even allowing the group to hone their skills with practice.
